Arya (Madras)

The Arya was a monthly magazine published from Madras between April 1901 and October 1909 (Vol. 1 to Vol. 8/Vol. 1 (New Series)). Its editors included T. A. Swaminatha Aiyar and A. Ramaseshan.

The Ideas of India database covers Vol. 1 to Vol. 7, No. 3 of the first series (1901-1908) and Vol. 1, Nos. 1-4 (1909) of the new series of the Arya, with the following omissions:

  • Vol. 3, 1903-1904 (No. 5 and beyond)
  • Vol. 6, 1906-1907 (No. 7 and beyond)
  • Vol. 1 (1901-1902) has 11 issues (April 1901-February 1902). Vol. 2 (March 1901-March 1902) begins with a double number for March-April 1901.
  • Vol. 8 is also numbered Vol. 1 (New Series). The July 1909 issue is numbered Vol. 1, No. 1 (New Series) and Vol. 8, No. 3 (Old Series); the August 1909 issue is numbered Vol. 1, No. 2 (New Series) and Vol. 8, No. 3 (Old Series); the September 1909 issue is numbered Vol. 1, No. 3 (New Series) and Vol. 8, No. 4 (Old Series); the October 1909 issue is numbered Vol. 8, No. 4.
The subtitles of the Arya varied:

  • A Monthly Magazine and Review Devoted Mainly to Aryan Religion, Science, Philosophy and Literature (Vol. 1 – Vol. 4, No. 6)
  • A Monthly Magazine and Review Devoted Mainly to Aryan Religion, Science, Philosophy, Literature and Current Topics (Vol. 4, No. 7 – Vol. 6)
  • A Magazine of Light, Love and Life As Reflected in Aryan Religion, Science, Philosophy, Literature and Current Topics (Vol. 7)
  • A Monthly Journal of Light Love and Life (Vol. 8)
